Overview

It’s been said that music is a universal language, transcending borders and cultures. There’s a message in the music. This session will highlight various genres of music focusing on fatherhood.

Learning outcome
  • Participants will write to express their thoughts after listening to several songs (TBD).
  • Participants will do the following upon hearing musical selections: sequence events, summarize ideas, identify conflicts and resolutions, identify cause and effect relationships, analyze characters, and problem solutions through group discussion.
  • Participants will reflect on their roles as a father, their relationship with fathers, and their relationship with their children.
Materials

Journals (composition notebooks), pens/pencils, musical selections

Activity 1 — “Music to the Soul” · Time: 30-45 minutes

Participants will work in pairs/small groups listening to selected songs focusing on fatherhood.

  • Have the fathers create a flow map.
  • In each box, fathers will write a major event that a song evokes.
  • The major events should be arranged in the order in which the song stimulates as a man and father.
  • Encourage the fathers to use no more than 6 boxes.
  • Encourage fathers to express how they got here.
Activity 2 — Sequencing · Time: 15-20 minutes
